Historic Accommodations

By Lee Schindel

Vacationing on the Outer Banks usually involves a lot of activity; the area can keep the whole family happy and busy with trips to the beach, dining out and shopping. But along with all that, you and your family could also be witnessing the history of the Outer Banks and gaining a real sense of place that goes beyond your weeklong vacation. On your next visit, consider staying in one of several historic accommodations.

You’ll find the guest quarters are unique compared to hotel lodgings or even a cottage rental. You can become part of the living history of the area and enjoy the strong local tradition of oral history. Innkeepers of historic properties act as stewards of the local family stories and share them with guests. They collect information about the house from descendants of the home’s previous owners and other locals.

Guests gain a new perspective on the area by interacting with the local community and hearing stories that have been handed down over generations of Outer Bankers. The current innkeepers may not be descendants of the original owners, but they have lovingly restored the homes to their original appearance, in some cases after the home suffered neglect.

Many owners worked at restoring the property for years before they could open their doors for guests. When restoring the homes, innkeepers also add modern conveniences and creature comforts that make these historic places top-notch accommodations. Amenities vary among inns so ask for details when making a reservation.

Personal attention and service, however, are standard at all inns so inquire about the history of the place, sit back, and enjoy being part of the ongoing history of the Outer Banks.
